Multifunction Device Security

The U.S. Department of Defense and many other security-conscious organizations are adopting intelligent identity cards (e.g. smart card, Common Access Card/CAC) for multi-factor user authentication. All computers and networked devices will require card access and authentication for this model to work successfully.

Many computer keyboards and laptops now have built-in card readers. And yet, many networked devices, particularly multi-function printers and scanners, do not support identity card access and authentication. Even most new models do not offer identity card support. In some highly secure environments, scan and copy functions have been disabled, turning many otherwise useful devices into very expensive printers.

Cryptek offers solutions that incorporate the Netgard™ MFD appliance, an affordable solution that helps security-conscious organizations make the most of their multi-function devices by bringing them into compliance with identity card access requirements (such as HSPD-12).

Cryptek authentication solutions for networked, special purpose devices, such as multi-function printer/scanner/copiers incorporate the Netgard MFD appliance. This approach protects a network by requiring users to authenticate themselves with a smartcard and personal identification number (PIN), thereby preventing unauthorized users from accessing privileged materials or tampering with network resources. Without a card and PIN, the Netgard MFD appliance does not permit the user to scan and send from the multi-function device to network resources.
